Hello Ripplevoxers! The 11th Hour is basically a documentary, but before you think that is just another boring documentary, it actually has Leonardo Di Caprio hosting it! Alright, if he doesn’t appeal to you, then the contents of this documentary should. The 11th Hour reveals to us, through interviews with scientists and researchers, how we as humans have been exploiting and harming the earth since we came into existence. This is especially so in today’s world. We seemingly do not view the earth as having needs and rights, but as pieces of property that we own. Such one-sided views and attitudes are now coming back to haunt us. 11th Hour links recent natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and floods in Asia and Europe to our increasing polluting of the earth with harmful substances. The documentary explains how unless we change, things are only going to be worse. The documentary brings in many interesting and thought-provoking ways of viewing things, such as: “.. the earth was fine before humans came, and will continue to be fine after humans leave..” “.. people always talk about saving the earth, but it is really humans who need saving..” But before you think that this documentary paints only a bleak and depressing picture, it also does offer hope. Hope in new technology that allows us to enjoy life as we know it but does not harm the earth as much as we are doing now. Hope that we as the next generation will step up to make the difference that the earth needs. Personally, I find this documentary to be very reflective. It does not tell you explicitly what to do, rather, it tells you what the current situation is and leaves room for you to decide for yourself what needs to be done. The 11th Hour is a HUGE wake-up call that ALL OF US need to hear. Go catch it! |
