Hairspray was an awesome movie! i want to watch it againnnn.... But anwyay, this is a remake from its 1988version by John Waters and the Broadway musical Hairspray from 2002. Set in Baltimore of the 1960s, Hairspray is a story of how a plussized girl, Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky), gets herself onto Baltimore’shippest TV dance show in Baltimore. This hard journey also results in accomplishing racially integrated television,a significant step to breaking racial tension and barriers. Not only was a greatwatch—it kept me boogying in my seat all the way through(snaps for musicals!); it also has animportant message about stereotyping. The movie has a star studded cast: JohnTravolta (did you watch Grease??), Michelle Pfieffer, Christopher Walken,Amanda Bynes (she’s da man!), James Marsden (he was Cyclops in Xmen!), and QueenLatifah. Then, there’s Brittany Snow, Zac Efron (we all know about High SchoolMusical, but did anyone see the Derby Stallion? He can dance, he can sing, and score! he can ride horses! Too bad he’staken, girls), Elijah Kelley, Allison Janney, and the leading lady—NikkiBlonsky. I find this a really well organized movie. The choreographywas smooth, it was colorful, scenes were balanced, there was a sassy, joyful feel to it, and there was an amazing focus on detail! Forcrying out loud, there was fake cellulite as part of the Edna Turnblad bodysuit that John Travolta wore. You can get a good view of this when he lies down on the beach chair in the yard, after the Turnblads cavort to "(You're) Timeless to Me".
My favorite number is "Run and Tell That", whichwas performed when the kids cut detention. I like how the gang of them wentfrom detention room, to hall, to school grounds, then a wee bit further down tothe ‘black’ bus, then from the bus, to Seaweed’s (Kelley) place. But the mostfabulous scene is naturally, the finale—"You Can't Stop the Beat"! |
