Denim Deconstruction Finals It was like 2.15pm. "Definitely late," I murmured to myself. I whipped out my Motorola and SMSed Veronica in 5 seconds flat. "B there in 5 mins. On the way." So I dashed out of the train at Orchard MRT and made my way out via Tangs exit. Being fashionable means not bringing any umbrella, no matter how much you know it's going to rain. SOoo very me. Void of any shyness, I took turns approaching strangers with big umbrellas to seek shelter all the way from Tangs to Paragon. I reached GAS boutique, thinking I was damn late. Well, a few seconds later, I got an SMS from Veronica, saying that she was stuck in traffic. Apparently I was the only one who was there first. Then there was Khai & Belle (Ripplevox), Veronica, the MTV Crew, the student-designers for Denim Deconstruction and the leg-casted Nicole, another Ripple (poor dear!) who streamed into GAS in chronological order. So Angeline (a new MTV producer, I heard) gave our cue cards on the intro and questions for the shoot. Just a low-down on the aim of the day: Denim Deconstruction Finals. GAS jeans were given to the students for experimentation and it sprouted a range of stylish wear from dresses to jackets, vests & skirts. The top few designs were then chosen to be showcased on MTV. Professional judges (including MTV's Coby) would choose one winner and we (Khai, Belle, Nicole & I) would choose another one. Halfway through the shoot with the professional judges, my stomach rumbled just as Coby said to himself, "I NEED a DOUBLE-BURGER right NOW." It was a moment that was involuntarily memorable. Then came Ripples' turn to browse through the designs while being 'shot' at. We all came to a consensus: the winning design was definitely Victoria Willman's, for that sleek jeans' dress & shredded-like left sleeve. Obviously the winning choice. The professional judges chose the jacket-like piece from Alexandra Widjaja.. which was OK. I began to question myself whether the judges really were professional. Haha.. actually, I guess they were looking for something easy-to-wear and sell-able to the market. They did 'special-mentioned' Victoria for her creativity though. So the judges had some small 'makan' & drinks and left shortly while we Ripples got ready to shoot our lines. I could never forget Ikram, Djasman & Anna (camera, sound & another producer). They were so sarcastically funny! There was one scene which Ikram was so excited about. He was arranging our positions to do a wide shot for all of us. After all the 'left-right-front-center' instructions, he finally looked at us and said, "This is like an MTV video." You should have seen the look of satisfaction on his face. It's hardworking people like him who makes MTV happen and I respect that. We wrapped up close to 6pm. It was physically draining mainly because I stood around a lot, not to mention my empty stomach. Suddenly out of nowhere, a familiar and popular voice was to be heard. Donita! One of the super-original VJs from MTV! She was hugging the MTV Crew like long-lost buddies. She looked really gorgeous. Khai, if you're reading this, I almost saw you wagging. ; P - - - drip drip! Haha joking.. I know you were damn exhilarated. So thanks Brent, Veronica and Ripplevox team for the chance. It was great. I look forward to more kick-ass-ignments. Maybe more on nightlife? I'm all out for that one. Cheers, Zan |
