It's really an intriguing; the idea that a phone could be the be-alland end-all of pockety stuff you carry everyday. First, it doubled asmusic player, and then a camera, and then a tv. And how 'bout this? AnEz-link card.
From the beginning, I thought the idea was cool.Imagine people staring at you 'beeping' your bus ride using your phone.Plus, I thought it could help reduce further the probability of melosing my phone (on the bus at least). You see, I'm really a serialphone-loser till last year; but I've repent.
But enough of meand my chronic 'goldfish memory' problem. Now that we have the generalidea appeal of the phone, let's get back to the real thing.
Design Thedesign for the phone would be at best, safe. It's a little heavy andboxy, but it is a safe design for a phone. It looked like the SonyEricsson K750i at a glance, but then gives you the feeling that Nokiahad a hand in it. It does give me the feeling that it was mass-producedsomewhere in remote China. But it's a prototype, so all in all, thedesign is forgivable.
Functions Function-wise, thephone is clumsy. I have been using the Sony Ericsson K810i for a whileand switching to this phone felt stepping back to a time machine. Themenu was el-passe, and the screen was dim and faded. The camera didn'tfeel like it was 2mp, or maybe it's just the screen. Though as a phone,it does function well enough- but you'd get the urge to switch back toyour old phone. You'd start wondering whether the extra bit of havingan ez-link function in a phone was worth the switch. Well is it?
Theez-link is rather flaky. The phone would switch off on its own if youtap it against the ez-link machine without 'locking'. I'm sure they'reironing this out or maybe mine was a lemon, but still, it boggles mewhy. After a while of using it as an ez-link card, you don't reallyfeel all that special. It's just tapping in and out something else outof your pocket; you are still tapping something out of your pocket. It's just a little heavier, and if you're talking on the phone- it's a little distracting.
Overall Cheersto the idea, but let's get back to the drawing board. Though I stillthink the idea is neat, I think it could be ahead of its time, or maybejust not dazzling enough. I think it's a nice additional feature to aphone that should already have all the other gizmos. This is frankly, because nowadays, only tech-geeks like me would be interested to try orbuy. People are already spoilt affordable phones with fancy displaysand user-friendly menus. Most phones don't even use polyphonicsanymore. I think the appeal of carrying an ez-link and a phone in one device will not suffice on its own. You gotta give more goodies.
