NFC Assignment
Hi Ripplevox,

I am one of the NFC Phone Trial user. This document will inform about my opinions, experiences and suggestions related to the NFC Phone.

1.Background
Mobile phones are one of the mobile communication devices that are fast becoming necessities in this digital age. By integrating near field communcations (NFC) technology in mobile devices, this creates a new platform for making payments wirelessly and easy access to consumer information of participating merchants. In other words, NFC provides the possibility of transforming an everyday necessity into a convenient e-wallet. This draws parallel to Japan's largest mobile operator NTT Docomo which uses their propietary network technology and mobile phones to enable mobile payment services.

To find out the conveniences of having both a mobile phone and an EZlinkcard together, I signed up for the 6-month trial of NFC Trial by EZ-Link-StarHub partnership in 2007. With the 6-month  trials coming to an end soon, I have my experiences to share. Before that, I thought it would be fair to tell something about my profile before the trial. The proceeding sections were developed based on 2 aspects - which I find most relevant - the mobile phone interface and the ezlink function

2.Profile - Nokia user, MRT/bus commuter and occassion shopper.
I have been using mobile phone since year 2000 to date. My current phones are Nokia phones -  E65 model and 6151 model. I have grown accustomed to the Nokia S40 and S60 interface and in my opinion, I like their interfaces because I find them intuitive and fast response.

I stay in Boon Keng area and I travel by bus and MRT train to Jurong East MRT station where I board the company bus which bring me to the office in Tuas. A one-way travelling time between home to office is about 1.5 hours. I work 5 days and on weekends I also travel by bus or MRT to city.

I usually travel out to meet friends and have meals. Shopping is never my past time. Even if I shop, I go to Plaza Singapore, Suntec or Marina Square. Serious shopping ( with purchase about $100 and above) is usually done year end.

3. Experiences with mobile phone interface
The NFC Trial phone (SZ1.0) has the similiar menu layout to Nokia S40 and S60. Icons are easily interpreted and I managed to understand and navigate through the menus without using the User Guide.

I use short message service (SMS) frequently and can send up to 20 SMS a day. The NFC Trial phone has similiar SMS interface to Samsung ( I've used one previously). I am not used to this interface and when I create a SMS or replying SMS, it took me considerable time to input the text, even with the text predictive function turn on. The tacky numeric buttons on the NFC trial phone sometimes does little help to make text easier. Response time between inputing words, navigating menus to send or read the SMS can be quite long, as compared to performing the same SMS operations on the E65 and 6151 Nokia phones.

I often listen to music during commuting between office and home. Using the "Play Music" function in the NFC Phone can be a chore. Downloading songs to the phone can be difficult and slow, as the only way I explored was to transfer files via Bluetooth from my Nokia Phones. There is a lag time of about 2 seconds between pressing the play button and playing the actual song I only transferred 2 music files just to try out the audio music function and do not use it any more after that.

Video and camera function - I will not elaborate as I do not use much on either on Nokia or NFC phone. Anyhow, I will not want to transfer out megabytes of pictures via Bluetooth on the NFC phone to another phone before to the PC.
